Jim Petro, Ohio Auditor of State, was presented with the "Outstanding Achievement in Government" award by the National Association of Certified Fraud Examiners at their National Convention held in August, 2002 in Hollywood, California.
The "Outstanding Achievement in Government Award" is presented to a qualified Association member who is an employee of a local, state or federal government entity and 1) was in charge of or participated in a significant investigation of a local, state or federal government agency that resulted in a white-collar crime conviction; 2) developed and had implemented a system of internal controls intended to prevent or deter fraud within local, state or federal government; 3) was instrumental in a large monetary recovery from the successful prosecution of a fraud or white-collar crime case involving a government entity; or 4) was instrumental in having new or revised fraud and/or white-collar crime legislation enacted at any level of government.
Mr. Petro has served as Auditor of State for the last eight years and will be leaving office in January, 2003.  During his tenure, Mr. Petro has convicted more than 90 public officials and vendors.  The Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper once reported that Mr. Petro had "unmasked more financial fraud in his first 2 1/2 years on the job than his predecessors had found (in the previous) 24 (years)."  Those convicted included a state university dean, a county sheriff, Cleveland's public housing chief, four school treasurers and numerous others.
Because of Mr. Petro's dedication to preventing government fraud and corruption, he was presented with this award.
In February, 2002, President Robert Lidman, Vice-President Clifford Davis and Board Member Lynda Buel presented to the Columbus Division of Police's Forgery/Fraud Unit a digital camera for use in gathering evidence during burglary and fraud investigations.
